Creative Connections: learn all about what happened at our seminar and workshop exploring arts, health, and early years

Posted on: April 20th, 2012 by emmaeager No Comments

Creative Connections, a 2-day professional development programme in the area of arts, health & early years (arts for babies/toddlers and their parents) was held at the end of March, with a very exciting line-up of speakers and artists from around Europe contributing.

Ruth Churchill Dower, Director of Earlyarts UK, and Catherine Maguire, President of the Irish Association for Infant Mental Health, spoke at the seminar.

Artists’ workshops were presented by Kate Wilson (Visual Artist, Ireland), Hannah Lefeuvre (Community Dance Artist, UK), Anna Rosenfelder (Children´s Theatre Artist, Facilitator, Germany) and Ger Relph (Musician, Ireland)

Creative Connections was hosted by Helium in association with Westmeath County Council Arts Office, with support from the Arts Council. Helium would like to gratefully acknowledge Mullingar Arts Centre for providing a venue for part of this event.

A PDF of key points from discussion between Ruth and Catherine, who reflected on their observation of the morning’s workshops with parents and babies/toddlers

Catherine Maguire’s presentation will be made available to download in early May.

Feedback from participants after Artists’ Workshop at Creative Connections
Artists were asked to share something that they would take away from the workshop:
• It was great to learn how early children start to absorb and react to the activities around
them.
• The importance of providing bonding experiences for parents and children.
• Fantastic Experience! Thank you so much!
• Stimulating, with inspiring workable ideas on many levels.
• Process more important than product. Concept – setup and clean up become part of
interaction. Focussed space!
• The atmosphere today has been so inspiring! I hope I can take a little of this to my own
workshop spaces. Thank you!
• Giving children space to be creative, use of storytelling, and the importance of sensory
activities.

Helium at the Cairde Festival

Posted on: July 5th, 2010 by Avril Carr No Comments

The Cairde Festival is in full swing in Sligo this week and Helium is delighted to be involved. On Friday we were involved in a celebration of Arts + Health in Sligo which took place in Joyn on Charles Street. The contributing organisations are exploring the idea of an Arts + Health Network and the Cairde festival gave the groups an opportunity to platform all of the great work that is going on. Helium displayed some of the work from the Puppet Portal Project and also showed the new Infant Imaginings video which can be seen on the homepage. Also exhibiting were the Arts Initiative in Mental Health, Sligo Youth Theatre, Joyn and Sligo Arts Service. Work by service users of Irish Wheelchair Association, National Learning Network, Mental Health Services and disability services was displayed and can be seen all this week in Joyn. The event was launched by Brid MacConville artist and former OT Manager with Mental Health Services. Brid was involved in developing the Arts + Health strategy for Sligo some years ago.

On Saturday Helium performed along with Monkeyshine Theatre and Papilio Theatre in the Storytelling tent in the People’s Park. Despite gale force winds, the tent stayed up and all of the shows were very well attended. Helium performed Infant Imaginings for 0-3 year olds with musician Sean Callagy and special guests Kareen Pennefather and Anna Rosenfelder. The show was very well received and it was interesting to see this show performed for a larger group as it is usually a one-to-one performance. Photos of this event can be seen below.

Infant Imaginings in Sligo

Infant Imaginings, Helium’s work-in-progress performance for parents, babies and their siblings has been visiting local clinics in County Sligo over the last few weeks. Here’s a sample of what the audience experiences while they wait to see the public health nurse.

The performers are Helene Hugel (Helium’s artistic director) and Sean Callagy. Kareen Pennefather from Monkeyshine Theatre is collaborating director and Niamh O’Connor has been documenting the project.

Supported by Sligo Rapid and funded by Sligo Arts Office.
