Teenagers’ Story Inspires Helium Arts’ Christmas Fawn Appeal

A girl escapes into the forest at night and under the stars she transforms into a fawn who is free to roam and do as she pleases. This story was created by a teenager taking part in Helium Arts’ Cloudlands project for young people in hospital, collaborating with artist-in-residence Rachel Tynan during her long hospital stays. Inspired by her time working with teenagers in hospital, Rachel has designed The Fawn Christmas decoration, all proceeds of which will go to Helium Arts’ Cloudlands project, enabling more teenagers across the country to take part in creative activities during their hospital stay.

Helium Arts, the children’s arts and health charity, has teamed up with graphic design company Alljoy Design to realise Rachel’s unique design. Alljoy Design has created laser-cut Fawn decorations in three different colours which can be bought at Third Space in Smithfield and Aungier Street in Dublin and online at: https://www.iregister.ie/v2/events/helium-arts-christmas-faun/

Helene Hugel, CEO of Helium Arts, said: ‘Helium Arts’ Christmas campaign this year highlights the wonderful work that can emerge when teenagers collaborate with an artist in hospital. The essence of the Cloudlands project is to provide teens in hospital with a voice and a place to be away from their illness. We are delighted that design company Alljoy and conscientious trader Third Space are working with us on this campaign which will help us bring our creative projects to more young people in hospital.

Lingxiao Ji, Managing Director at Alljoy Design Ltd, said: ‘At Alljoy Design, our motto is to bring joy to all by designing with love. The partnership with Helium Arts has allowed us to bring the philosophy behind our work into a new area to raise important funds and awareness for Helium’s creative projects supporting sick children and teenagers.

Cloudlands has been running in hospitals nationwide since 2012. The project was developed by Helium Arts to provide teenagers in hospital with creative and social outlets, particularly for those who spend significant amounts of time in hospital. Teenagers work with an artist in residence over an eight-month period each year developing new artworks based on their ideas, interests and experiences. Cloudlands involves elements of artmaking, performance, filmmaking, animation, puppetry and interactive storytelling.

‘It made all the worries go away. It lets me be Me.’ – Participant on the Cloudlands project

Alljoy Design Ltd is a design company based in Dublin. Established in 2009 by Lingxiao Ji, originally from China, ‘Design with love’ is their philosophy. They create stylish and affordable laser cut greeting cards, art and homeware. http://www.alljoydesign.com/

Third Space is a social business venture set up to open and run eating and meeting places in redeveloped areas of Dublin that lack these third places. The first Third Space has become a hub for the community in the Smithfield area with space for creative, cultural and community activities. A new Third Space has recently opened at the YMCA on Aungier Street. http://www.thirdspace.ie/
