Superheroes: A new film project with CanTeen

For the past three years, we’ve worked with CanTeen, the national support group for young people affected by cancer, on Helium’s Two Suitcases community film project. Last year, one of the participants came up with the idea of transforming medical interventions (specifically radiation therapy) into healing superpowers. This has become the starting point for this year’s film project which draws on milestones in young people’s lives to investigate and subvert the traditional superhero narrative. And it’s thrown up lots of exciting possibilities for creating green screen and animated effects on this year’s film camp.

We were delighted to receive funding from the Arts Council’s Young Ensembles Scheme to proceed with the project which will be led by visual artist Siobhan Clancy with mentors Alan Brennan (filmmaker), Louise Manifold (visual artist / experimental filmmaker), Ben Murnane (writer) and David Cunningham (sound technician). The project is managed by Emma Eager from Helium Arts.

Brainstorming workshop

In January, Helium facilitated a brainstorming workshop with CanTeen at Cuisle Holiday Centre in Roscommon to develop the superpowers theme, looking at key milestones and moments in participants’ lives and having fun creating superhero characters and traits.

“Milestones and Moments”

Film development workshop

We headed to Monaghan in July and screened film clips from the January workshop which included scenes in which characters revealed their superpowers and others which focused on milestones and moments in teenagers’ lives. Participants fed back on their favourite superpowers and milestones. The rest of the day was spent creating storyboard collages and filming backdrops, effects and spatial illusions which will be incorporated into the green screen and animated elements on this year’s film camp in August. As ever, the creativity and imagination of the young people in dreaming up other worlds was inspiring!
