Ring in the new year with a look at Helium’s online Creative Health Hub

Happy New Year! As we look to the future and set our goals for 2020, we wanted to share an exciting development from this past year. In 2019, we created an online element of our Creative Health Hub programme. Check out some of 2019’s most memorable moments:

The Helium Creative Health Hub Online Programme
Thanks to the belief and vision of our supporters, Helium’s online Creative Health Hub was piloted through a project working with teenagers living with cystic fibrosis. Due to the risk of cross infection, CF patients cannot come into close physical contact, but this new online format allowed them to connect with a community of friends who understand what life with illness is like. Using digital tools and online mediated meet-ups along with access to professional artist mentors, the project supported a group art journaling experience over six online sessions, led by artist Rachel Tynan and delivered in partnership with An Cosán Virtual Community College.

The group named themselves “Seven Summer Stars”, and developed close connections over the weeks of the programme. Here’s what the participants had to say about the project,

“I thought it was really cool to meet other people with Cystic Fibrosis and have that connection. And I like how we’re sort of all in the same room at the same time… that’s comforting.”

“We started to connect through the art, and became good friends, even though we haven’t even met each other in real life!”

You can hear the participants talk about the project and what it meant to them in the Seven Summer Stars video.

This exciting new element of our Creative Health Hubs will provide important connections among children and young people who are most marginalised by illness.

Connecting children to a meaningful creative and social outlet
This year, through the kindness of supporters like you, our artists worked with 1,600 children across all of our programmes. That’s five times more than in 2018. But we still have hundreds of families on waiting lists to access our programme. We can’t let this figure continue to rise.

Will you give the gift of creativity this Christmas to connect more children like these seven summer stars to a meaningful creative and social outlet in 2020?

The Helium Arts Creative Health Hub programme works between hospital clinics, community and online settings and takes an “arts on referral” approach, where families we meet in hospitals have the opportunity to be referred onto our community programme. The Creative Health Hub online programme provides opportunities for those most marginalised by serious medical conditions to connect creatively through an virtual system. Medical cover is provided in all of our community work, so children can participate worry free.
